NEW 14-19 DIPLOMA IN HAIR AND BEAUTY STUDIES January 2010 White Rose is working in partnership with many local schools, local authorities and other providers to deliver the new Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies. The first group of learners on the new Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies started their programme with us in September 2009. Please contact us for further information. What are Diplomas
Diplomas are exciting new qualifications for 14-19 year olds. They offer a real alternative to other qualifications and provide the opportunity for an imaginative, high quality mix of academic education and applied learning.
Diplomas can prepare learners for the most demanding university courses or offer them the opportunity to plan to enter the workforce directly from their Diploma studies. They can be suitable for learners who enjoy the challenge and stimulation of developing knowledge and skills in a real world environment.
Diplomas are recognised by UCAS, Higher Education institutions and employers and accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).
What are the Diploma Levels
A Diploma is available at Foundation, Higher and Advanced level.
Starting at Year 10 or 12,
A Foundation Diploma is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade D to G
A Higher Diploma is equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A* to C.
Starting at Year 12 or above,
An Advanced Diploma is equivalent to 3 and a half A-Levels.
A Progression Diploma will also be available and equivalent to 2 and a half A-Levels. This will be aimed at those who do not wish to complete a whole Advanced Diploma.
Foundation and Higher Diploma learners can continue with education or further training. They can also study for the next level of Diploma, or take a different type of qualification such as GCSEs, A levels, an Advanced Apprenticeship or an NVQ.
What makes up a Diploma
A Diploma is made up of a number of parts:
Principal Learning: this will develop selected knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the hair and beauty sector, using realistic work experience.
Project: as part of a Diploma, learners get the chance to complete a project on a subject of their choice.
Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills: the Diploma will help learners to develop personal, learning and thinking skills including those for teamwork, customer care, creativity and communication amongst others.
Functional Skills: learners will also study English, Maths and ICT.
Additional and Specialist Learning: learners will be able to choose from a range of Additional and Specialist Learning based on their interests and career goals. This may include further specialisation such as nail enhancements or principles of massage or other options from outside the sector. Learners can also choose to include other GCSEs or A-Levels.
